Meet Deb.  When she’s not reading or spending time with her grandchildren, this Vocational Specialist loves helping people with disabilities find employment.  She encourages people to take risks and not to become discouraged when looking for employment.  We are so fortunate to have Deb as a member of the Employment Network.

  • What kind of work do you do?  Where do you work at?

Deb is a Vocational Specialist with Curative Works. She meets with people with disabilities to assess their vocational skills through paper and pencil, work samples and through interviews to find out what they are interested in, are good at and what their short term and long term goals are. She explains that she really enjoys this work because everyone comes to the table with different skills and abilities and vocational goals and we explore some options based on the test results.

  • Tell us some good news: what’s the most exciting thing happening for you or for people with disabilities who want to work?

Right now,  Deb says that the most exciting thing happening in her field is that Wisconsin is leading the way as a state that is hiring more people with disabilities.  “I am very proud of this fact, although we still have a ways to go with hiring and educating employers about the benefits of hiring people with disabilities,” she points out.

  • What employment tip or resource would you like to share with people who want to work?

Deb encourages people to learn to advocate for themselves and not to be afraid to take a risk when looking for work. She explains that even though you may be working with a job developer, it is important to also look for jobs too with your job developer.  She also encourages people not to be discouraged when looking for work. “I have worked with people who finally found work after two years of looking. Sometimes it takes time to find the right job and the right employer,” she says.

  • What’s your dream vacation?

Deb’s dream vacation would be at a cottage on a lake with lots of books to read.

  • What are some of your hobbies?

Deb is an avid reader, and says she sometimes will read the weekend away. She also has two grandchildren who she loves to spend time with.
